Added 03/09/09: Welcome to the world of Sir Collins’ Music Wheel, a parallel universe of early seventies reggae music that has, until now, been pretty much lost to history, apart from a small collectors market willing to pay high prices for the original releases. Clancy Collins arrived in England in 1957, instigating the Collins Down Beat sound system. Coming from a musical background, music was in his blood. By the turn of the seventies he had got into music production, licensing backing tracks from Bunny Lee he overdubbed vocals and sound effects to produce idiosyncratic tunes that fitted in well alongside his contemporaries Joe Monsano aka Joe The Boss, Lloyd Charmers and Lee Perry. Most of his story is shrouded in the mists of time, but he has recently emerged to begin reissuing his extensive back catalogue, three beautifully pressed and presented 45’s have already been issued, and now comes this intriguing vinyl only album, a re-release from 1973. Cramming twenty-two tracks onto one vinyl disc inna K Tel stylee, the sound quality is surprisingly good, featuring rare vocals from Alton Ellis, Gene Rondo, Owen Gray and Roy Shirley as well as many of the eccentric semi-instrumentals his collectors covet. This is a welcome turn of events, helping to shed light on one of the UK’s most enigmatic musical adventurers. Eccentric or genius? You decide. SCMW001CD
