San Francisco expat David Katz stated upon his arrival in the UK in the late eighties that it was his intention to meet Lee Perry and write his biography, and in 2000, this excellent book proved that he did just that. The subject; Lee Perry aka Scratch aka The Upsetter aka x-amount of aliases, needs no introduction of course. During the 1970's the recordings he made with many of the great talents of Jamaican music, including Bob Marley, and especially once he got his own studio in Kingston, the legendary Black Ark, pushed the barriers of sound way beyond the norm for reggae music, or indeed any music, and were recognised at the time as unique and mind-blowing, even if they were far from the regular sounds of the day and failed to enjoy much success in Jamaica. Katz digs deep into all aspects of Perry's career, which continues apace to this day. The book is a stunning achievement and deserves to be widely read.
