Perry's Magnum Opus? Maybe that's how he saw it. Certainly his genius shines on the title track, and on most of the music upon which he vocalises. Perry's voice though is undeniably an acquired taste - sweetened though it may be by the female backing singers Full Experience - and this album was rejected by Island at the time, so the story goes, feeding feelings of frustration that apparently contributed to his eventual mental disintegration and the demise of the Black Ark studio a few years later. Perhaps Evil Tongues and Big Neck Police hint at other factors. Otherwise Perry sounds in buoyant form on tracks such as Soul Fire, Throw Some Water In, Favourite Dish, the immortal Yu Squeeze My Panhandle and his own rendition of his big hit from a few years earlier; Curly Locks. Certainly any fan of Perry's celebrated Black Ark sound should invest.
