Timely release for this fascinating artifact from the legendary Black Ark, a year or two before activities ceased when the genius producer Lee Perry blew his top and headed for the hills. Featuring the songs and vocals of two Congolese musicians Seskain Molenga and Kalo Kawongolo who washed up on Jamaica in early 1978 with the intention of recording a rock / African hybrid, and ended up at the Ark where this album was eventually recorded. Dave Katz's excellent sleeve notes tell the whole torturous story. But a vexed Perry gave the pair a near unusable mix and master tape that was rejected by Island Records at the time, so the Africans took the tape to Paris where it had a release that failed to sell before the two men returned to Africa to carry on with their musical careers and tried to forget about their sojourn in Jamaica. There was a Trojan CD only release some years ago under the title African Roots, but perhaps now this release, courtesy of Roots Vibration and Belgian Congolese music specialist Planet Ilunga now present it as a beautiful gate-fold sleeved vinyl release that will hopefully help to establish this amazing record in its rightful place in the musical pantheon.
