The latest release from Jamaican Recordings collects fifteen (twelve on the vinyl) instrumental tracks featuring the organ and synth playing of the late great Jackie Mittoo. All Bunny Lee productions of course, and, aside from the usual slightly confusing liner notes (why rename Thriller, Jackie’s version of Johnny Clarke’s Want-e Want-e Can’t Get-e, as No Get Dub Over?), it’s all good stuff with some tracks, notably Jah Jah Harmony, Look At Life and Locksome being very nice and previously unknown to this listener in any form. Mittoo was a musical genius, seemingly incapable of playing an inappropriate note. His best work may lie at Brentford Road, but fans of the late seventies rockers sound should enjoy this.
