Track Listing / Description

Second essential collection of seventies singles issued in 1981 after the phenomenal success of the classic Best Dressed Chicken In Town collection. Deejay Alimantado aka Winston Thompson issued these and other singles on his own Vital / Ital food label and others during the latter half of the seventies, remaining a cult figure on the scene until his classic singing tune Born For A Purpose, here spliced into its dubwise version, was championed by Johnny Rotten in 1977 who listened to it in the aftermath of his own tribulations. Alimantado’s song recorded his feelings after a near fatal collison with a Kingston bus. ‘Tado claimed that the driver saw him, but because he was a natty, allowed his bus to run him down because Jamaican society saw Rasta’s as less than human. Rotten identified with the song’s lyrics while recovering from injuries received in a vicious attack on him by “royalists” after the release of the Sex Pistol’s God Save The Queen. He played it on a Capital Radio programme and reggae suddenly became the punks’ second favourite music. Regardless of this, this, like its predeccesor, is an excellent collection featuring the deejay chatting lyrics across a sweet selection of riddim tracks including Slim Smith’s The Beatitude (Chant To Jah) Cornel Campbell’s Dance In A Greenwich Town (Dreadlocks Dread), Johnny Clarke’s Stealing (Call On Jah), Horace Andy’s Ain’t No Sunshine, the vocal to ‘Tado’s classic Best Dressed Chicken (Oil Crisis) and Still Alive, the deejay piece to Born For A Purpose.
