Don D Jr - Heavenless / Jackie Mittoo, Earl Walker & Pablove Black - After Christmas (Studio One / Soul Jazz) UK 12"
One of four superb Studio One discomix 12" reissues from Soul Jazz. Trombonist Vin Gordon is now recognised as a stalwart Brentford Road figure, still very active and recording, but back in the day, his name was rarely mentioned on the many Studio One recordings he made. His nickname of Don Drummond Junior also led to his obscurity, the late ska trombonist Don Drummond usually hailed as the genius of his instrument. In fact the rackle-shackle Heavenless - great title - was assumed as being by Don Drummond upon its release, though here Soul Jazz give Mr Gordon his due. After Christmas is a towering pinnacle of the sound that Mr. Dodd achieved in the late seventies when Jackie Mittoo returned to the fold from his Canadian retreat, and is almost certainly the finest Christmas record ever made. Apart from the brooding chorus of Joy To The World that occurs once or twice it is hardly a Christmas song at all and is better understood as simply a fabulous piece of minor key reggae music, the likes of which will never be repeated, so you know what to do.
