Jamaica may have had King Tubby, Lee Perry and Scientist, but back in the seventies and early eighties, before the Mad Professor and Adrian Sherwood, we had Dennis ‘Blackbeard’ Bovell. Bovell was a reggae renaissance man, he wrote and sang, he played any musical instrument, he fronted the popular hit-making UK reggae band Matumbi, helmed Linton Kwesi Johnson’s Dub Band and operated the legendary West London sound system Jah Sufferer. But he became best known for his prowess at the mixing desk. In later years he mixed / produced records for avant punkers The Slits and The Pop Group. This CD collects various tracks that showcase Bovell’s dubwise performances and is an essential addition to any dub collection. PSCD39
