The Story of Randy’s Records, the forerunner of the mighty VP label based in New York and Miami. Randy’s was set up by Vincent Chin with his wife Miss Pat and later helmed by Vincent’s son Clive. Operating out of North Parade in downtown Kingston, Jamaica, Randy’s provided the populace with all the latest tunes and produced and released many hits themselves on their Impact! label, the cream of which makes up the two discs presented here. Kicking off with the early ska of Lord Creator’s 1962 recording Independent Jamaica and working through such gems as Don’t Stay Out Late, again from Creator, Royal Charlie by Charles Organaire, Alton Ellis’ storming Mouth A Massy, Creator again with the first version of Such Is Life, Count Machukie’s machine gun intro on Warfare, Augustus Pablo’s legendary Far East prototype Java and the killer I Roy piece Hospital Trolley, Jimmy London’s recently revived A Little Love, killers from Dennis Brown, Hortense Ellis, Gregory Isaacs, Lloyd Parks, and early pre Michael Rose Black Uhuru… too many to mention. The package includes a beautifully illustrated booklet and a bonus DVD featuring artist interviews, rare footage, vintage photo’s and much more. Essential.
