Various - Reggae Anthology: Joe Gibbs Scorchers From The Mighty Two (VP/North Parade) Double CD

VP’s North Parade imprint, created to revitalise the label’s classic seventies back catalogue, steps up the pace with this wonderful forty track collection of vintage productions from the late Joe Gibbs stable. Gibbs and his engineer, the late Errol ‘T’ Thompson created, alongside the Hookim brothers at Channel One, the sound of the late seventies. Together with the top flight session musicians they employed, including drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Lloyd Parks, known collectively as The Professionals, the sound the Gibbs studio achieved was bone hard and heavy as lead, beautifully mixed by Thompson, according to the musicians he worked with, including Augustus Pablo, the best live engineer in Jamaica. Many of these tunes were massive reggae hits of course; Two Sevens Clash, Boxing Around, I’m A Natty, while some – Money In My Pocket and  Althea & Donna’s Uptown Top Ranking – were worldwide pop hits. Gibbs was also responsible for some of the tuffest roots music ever including Naggo Morris’ Su Su Pon Rasta and Prince Far I’s deejay version, Sylford Walker’s Jah Golden Pen and Burn Babylon as well as prime Yard lovers rock including Ruddy Thomas’ update of Loving Pauper and Dennis Brown’s Love Has Found It’s Way.
