For anyone interested in the reggae music of the seventies, Rockers is a must. Released in 1979, it is, alongside 1972’s The Harder They Come, the best reggae film ever made. The story may be thin, but the magic of the film draws the viewer in, especially if you recognise the many reggae characters that seem to play themselves on the screen, the list of legendary artists is long, including Dirty Harry, Jacob Miller & Inner Circle, Leroy Smart, Dillinger, Bongo Herman, Gregory Isaacs – a wicked on stage performance of Slave Master - Burning Spear – his accapella rendition of Jah No Dead in the film is spine-tingling – Kiddus I – actually recording Graduation In Zion – Robbie Shakespeare, Big Youth, Jack Ruby, Big Joe, Joe Gibbs, Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis, Scully Simms, Mighty Diamonds, The Abbysinians – performing an acoustic version of Satta Massagana behind the dread in the opening scene, and of course Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace in the lead role. This is our favourite film here at Dub Vendor, and we strongly recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen it to do so immediately!
