Added 12/08/10: Black Solidarity repress of this classic early dub album mixed on the go – in about the time it takes to listen to it according to legend – by producer Herman Chin-Loy for his Aquarius label in 1971 according to the sleeve. Though that date might be a bit previous, it is certainly among the front runners for the title of the first complete dub LP. There are no effects, Chin-Loy just runs the riddims clear of vocals - with the notable exception of the dub to Dennis Brown’s great version of Carole King’s It’s Too Late – and drops the guitar / bass / drum etc. in and out according to whim. Some of Chin-Loy’s best riddims are given the treatment including Alton Ellis’ My Little Daughter, Dennis Brown’s Song My Mother Used To Sing and a dub to the very cut of the riddim that would later find greater fame as Augustus Pablo’s Cassava Piece and the all-time classic dub tour de force King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown, comparisons between the simple mix here and that masterpiece are an education to anybody wanting to know just exactly what made Tubby’s so special. Mastered from an original copy in good nick, this is a piece of reggae history.
