Easy Star All-Stars - Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (Easy Star) CD
Added 08/04/09: The Easy Star crew return with another reggaefied take on a classic rock album. First they struck with Dub Side Of The Moon (Pink Floyd), then followed with Radiodread (Radiohead), now they tackle The Beatles legendary Sgt Peppers album. This stuff probably only really makes sense if you’re familiar with the original album. Sgt Peppers made a monumental impression upon the young people of the day when released in 1967, at the height of the fabled “summer of love”, its musical breadth and depth revolutionised rock music and led to the domination of the album as the artists definitive statement, rather than the single. On this tribute, the All Stars, including such respected names as Luciano, Mighty Diamonds, Frankie Paul, Max Romeo, Steel Pulse, U Roy and Michael Rose – who admirably tackles the albums most feted track A Day In The Life, and Jewish / American artist Matisyahu taking on George Harrison’s mystical musings Within You Without You simply boggles the mind. It’s fun to compare the tracks with the original, the attention to detail is scary – it even has that backwards “message” on the “run out groove” at the end of A Day In The Life that fuelled the Paul Is Dead rumours that abounded at the time (see, I told you it makes more sense if you’re familiar with the original), and it works!
